Dean Smith

DEAN SMITH BA (Hon’s)

Dean has two children and has lived in the district for the last 38 years; he has been a practising artist for the past 25 years and has exhibited his work locally as well as in London.

His return to full-time studies in 1994 was part of an overall career objective to help support his artistic ambitions through education.

Dean’s two years at Basildon College proved to be extremely successful and resulted in his award from the college as Art Student of the Year 1995.

His studies continued at the University of East London where he successfully graduated with a BA (Hon’s) Degree in Visual Communication in 1998.

Dean’s portfolio includes a commission from Robins Cinema in 1994, exhibiting in the Berlesduna Gallery in 95,96 and 05 and workshops at the Castlepoint arts week in 1998 that included the Benfleet Station Mural. More recently his work can be seen on display in the Towngate Theatre, the Pitsea Leisure Centre and the Basildon Arts Gallery within the Eastgate Centre. He regularly exhibits at the Brentwood open, the Basildon Festival and the South Essex Open Exhibition

As well as teaching art Dean is a founder member of START, an organisation that is committed to supporting art and artists within the community, he is also on the committee for the South Essex Open Exhibition.

Dean has been involved in over thirty art projects in and around the Basildon area during the last 7 years and has worked with several local schools, recently he co-sculpting and exhibiting within the Eastgate Centre an 18ft FIFA world cup.

Dean has worked on several successful projects with Creative Partnerships Thames Gateway as well as working with the Basildon Arts Trust. Dean was involved in organising the meeting that led to the formation of CHASE.

This year Dean sat on the selection panel for Basildon district libraries

Dean currently co runs a working art studio, open to the public with fellow artist and friend Ben Murdoch in Billericay.
